Finding a Cure for the Big Three. Colic, Ulcers and Stress

The three biggest demons in the lives of show and race horses are relatively new to the equine world. A hundred ears ago Colic was rather unusual and ulcers were really rare in horses. And stress? Horsemen at the beginning of the last century would have laughed at that concept. Among Thoroughbreds and show horses today ulcers are shockingly common. Estimates put them at 88% to 90% of all horses involved in these endeavors. Colic is the number one cause of death among horses, and stress is usually the culprit in both cases.

Caligula

If stressed out and sick horses were human a doctor would no doubt recommend a change in lifestyle. Horses were meant to graze sixteen to twenty-two hours a day, eat complete, complex carbohydrates (like grass), and live in herds. Stabling, hauling, training and racing take their toll, so there's not much to be done about the source or the devastating end products of this equine problem, or is there?

I wasn't surprised when I found out John Hall and his company Freedom Health, LLC had developed a smart new supplement-style product that looks like it will revolutionize the way we care for our horses. Hall is the motor behind Freedom Saddles. Those are the handcrafted saddles that are individually fitted to horses and have become famous among horsemen for solving back and soreness problems. John is on a genuine quest to make life better for horses and he's incredibly innovative.

Angel Armour A

They call the new product Succeed, and after medical field research over the last two years they're now testing it in Standardbred, Saddlebred and Arabian barns with some pretty amazing initial findings. The first trainer to try Succeed was Shannon Wonson, an Australian who works with Standardbred race horses.

"I got a horse out of Delaware named Angel Armour A," says Shannon. "I had his stomach scoped and he had ulcers real bad. He wouldn't eat and he was in pretty bad shape. On top of all that he's nine and that's getting old for this game, so I thought he was a good one to try the Succeed. After a few days he started eating. After a few weeks I scoped his stomach again and found a huge difference in his ulcers. He's a pacer so I got him ready to race and after three months at the races he's won 12 out of 16 starts and broken his best time on the track. All of my horses in training are on Succeed daily now."

Kathy Capsuto and Dancing Up A Storm take a Victory Pass.

Saddlebred Amateur Kathy Capsuto had a similar experience with the product.

"I had three horses in bad shape and off of their feed," says Kathy. "My vet said I should give Succeed a try. Honestly, within three days the horses were eating again. One of them is pregnant and had an inflamed stomach. Within two weeks her stomach was no longer inflamed and after three weeks I drove her to Fine Harness Champion at the Kentucky World Championships. It's funny. One of the horses was a terrible cribber. He's stopped cribbing with Succeed. We're simply amazed."

Mary Trowbridge and BlueBeard

Arabian trainer Mary Trowbridge has been using Succeed in her barn with exciting results.

"We've noticed some very interesting changes in attitude with horses on Succeed," says Mary. "We see a better focus, a more willing disposition and a much improved sense of well being. I have one horse that is a chronic over achiever. She's more thoughtful, more relaxed and just does consistently better on Succeed. It's like finding out you've go a child that's been severely hyperactive because of sugar and now you have the answer to the problem."

Trainer Chad Judy noticed changes in his horses almost immediately.

"I have a major show horse that has always been cinchy. This has been a serious ongoing problem for years. I put her on Succeed and the problem has simply disappeared. Within three days after I started feeding Succeed I notice a real difference. It changed my show horses, their bad habits, stall manners, and training attitudes. I would like to put every horse I have on it."

Aequus

Scott Bennett, DVM has been a veterinarian since 1977 and is an associate at the Equine Services Clinic in Simpsonville, Kentucky. Working primarily with American Saddlebreds and other high strung show horses, Dr. Bennett has seen plenty of colics, ulcers and high stress levels in horses.

"I've been using Succeed for a few months now," says Dr. Bennett, "and I'm impressed at the way the product actually seems to improve ulcer conditions. I use Succeed with horses that have chronic Colic, ulcers and high stress levels. I've had limited success with other products that deal with stomach disorders. In my practice horses that are strung out, have diarrhea from undetermined sources and colicky horses have responded well to Succeed."

What is Succeed? It contains oat products, oat oil, soluble fiber and the most prevalent amino acids. What it apparently does is rebalance the hind gut, coat the digestive tract and promote the growth of mucosa that aid in digestion. In the process it also improves the immune system, nerves and soft tissue. In short, it's a digestive conditioning program that utilizes a common sense approach to the equine digestive system producing some pretty amazing results. Those using it credit the product with clearing up or seriously improving ulcers, improving appetite, condition, attitude, trainability, energy, and physical capabilities. When you feel good and don't hurt, it's amazing what you can do. At Freedom Health they suggest results within 90 day, but the horsemen we interviewed all noted positive changes almost immediately.

The product is being initially sold through veterinarians and select retailers.
